Competition Requirements
USS Number
Lap Times
Gear
Each race, whether sanctioned or non-sanctioned by US Speedskating, requires a US Speedskating number.
Each competition requires certain lap times for sign up and proper placement to ensure the skater is placed in the proper group for their age and ability level. Lap times are not required for novice skaters, and the skater can enter 0 for the requested times. Novice skaters are skaters with less than one year experience and have never raced in a USS sanctioned meet. Lap times from previous competitions can be used for experienced skaters.
Events will list their own specific protective gear requirements in their description. Purchase information on this equipment can be found on the equipment page.
2024-25 Team Races
Once new skaters familiarize themselves with our program, usually a few months in, we encourage them to participate in their first race. There are several competitions over the course of a season that are open to skaters of all abilities. Often times you'll see hockey and figure skaters competing at the novice level where no skill set is required to participate. It is proven that with repeated competition, skaters gain an extra edge that can't necessarily be garnered at practice. UCB will travel as a team to four races during the 2024-25 season (see below). A number of skaters also compete in additional races throughout the season.
